Terms of Use

These are the terms for coursechalk.com and the CourseChalk app, and for PaceChalk at pacechalk.com. They are written to be read. If something here is unclear, email me and I will tell you what it means.
Who you are dealing with
CourseChalk and PaceChalk are services of Bores Sports Technologies. Bores Sports Technologies is the trading name of Ethan Bores, a sole proprietor in Norwalk, Ohio. It is one person, not a company. In these terms, "I" and "me" mean him, and "you" means you.
You will see both names, so it is worth saying which is which. CourseChalk and PaceChalk are the products. Bores Sports Technologies is the business behind them. Your receipt comes from Link, the checkout Stripe runs, and lists what you bought. Your card statement starts with LINK.COM* BORES.
There is no support desk and no phone number. There is one person who answers email at support@coursechalk.com, usually the same day.
Who you are buying from
The license is mine to grant. The sale itself is handled by Stripe as merchant of record.
In practice that means Stripe is the seller on the transaction: Stripe takes the payment, issues the receipt and invoice, charges and remits any sales tax that is due, and handles disputes and billing questions. Your receipt and invoice come by email from Link, Stripe's checkout, and say the purchase was sold through Link. Everything about the software — what it does, whether it works, and support for it — is mine.
It is worth knowing which one to contact. A question about the charge — a receipt, a duplicate, a card problem — can go to either of us. A question about the app should come to me.
What CourseChalk is
A tool that runs in your web browser. You trace a cross country course on aerial imagery, it measures the line you drew, and it prints a meet flyer and packets with your course maps in them.
Your meet plan is a file on your own machine, unless you sign in and save it online, in which case it is also kept in your account until you delete it. A CourseChalk season pass is not a subscription: there is nothing to cancel.
You can make an account, and you do not have to. It does two things: it hands your license key back to you on a new machine instead of making you find the email, and it keeps the meets you choose to save online. Everything else the app does works signed out, and a key pasted in by hand works exactly as well as one fetched by signing in.
Saving online is a convenience, not a backup service. I take care of what you save, but for a meet you cannot afford to lose, keep a downloaded copy as well.
The free version and the season pass
The free version does everything, on one course. You can draw it, measure it, colour it by mile, build the flyer and both packets, and export any of them. Nothing is hidden behind the price — you see the real document before you decide.
Three things are different without a licence:
- One course per plan. A licence lifts the limit, so varsity, JV and the middle school race live on one map.
- Exports carry a SAMPLE watermark, and printed sheets carry one line at the bottom: “Made with CourseChalk”, with the website and the support address.
- Sheets export one at a time. The single zip holding all three is part of a licence.
Courses you have already drawn are never taken away. If a licence lapses, every course in your file stays, opens and prints — the limit applies to adding a new one, not to keeping what you made.
A season pass costs $49 and removes all three. It is for one person, and it runs until July 31 following the date you bought it — so a pass bought in September covers that entire cross country season, and a pass bought in June covers the season that follows.
A season pass is $49 plus any sales tax that applies where you are. Stripe works out whether tax is due and shows it before you pay. If you are buying for a school district or another tax-exempt body, email billing@borestechnologies.com before you buy, and I will sort out the exemption with you.
What you are buying is permission to use the software, not the software itself. I keep ownership of CourseChalk; you get a personal, non-exclusive license for the season you paid for.
About your key
Your license key is yours. Handing it to a colleague at another school is not something I will send a lawyer about, but a key that turns up on dozens of separate installations is a key I may switch off. If yours ever stops working and it should not have, email me — I will fix it the same day, and I will not make you prove anything.
When a season pass runs out, nothing breaks. The app keeps working, your files keep opening, and new exports carry the SAMPLE watermark and the contact line again.
PaceChalk
PaceChalk is an app for cross country coaches at pacechalk.com: race results and splits, season numbers, athlete pages, lists, records and the schedule. These terms cover it as well. The parts about maps, measurement, course safety and the license key are about CourseChalk only.
- Signing in. You sign in to PaceChalk with your CourseChalk account. The demo works without signing in.
- The free trial. Your first sign-in starts 30 days free, with your own teams saved online. No card is needed, and nothing is charged when it ends.
- The price. A PaceChalk pass is $49 a year. It is for one coach and covers every team that coach has. PaceChalk + CourseChalk is $79 a year, and adds a CourseChalk season pass for the same person. A PaceChalk staff plan is $99 a year: the coach who buys it, and up to 5 more coaches on all of that coach's teams. Staff + CourseChalk is $129 a year, and adds a CourseChalk season pass for the coach who buys it. All are plus any sales tax, which Stripe shows before you pay.
- Coaches on your teams. With a staff plan, or during the trial, you can add up to 5 coaches by the address they sign in with. An editor can change your teams; a viewer can only look. Both see everything in your teams, so add only coaches who may see your athletes' information. You can change or remove a coach at any time. Coaches on your teams can save changes only while your staff plan or trial runs.
- Yearly or one season. Each comes two ways. Yearly renews on the same date each year, at the price shown when you bought it, until you cancel. One season runs until July 31 following the date you bought it, and does not renew.
- Cancelling. Cancel a yearly pass any time at app.link.com/recurring, or email me and I will. Cancelling stops the next renewal; the pass runs to the end of the year you paid for. If I ever change the price, I will tell you by email before a renewal charges it.
- When a pass or the trial ends, nothing is deleted. What you saved stays in your account: you can download it, and it opens again with a pass. Saving new changes online needs a pass. You can delete it all at any time from the menu under your name.
- Your athletes' information. You enter it, so you are responsible for being allowed to. If your school or district has rules about student information in online tools, follow them. How PaceChalk keeps it is on its privacy page.
Saving online is a convenience, not a backup service. Download a copy now and then.
Free passes
Now and then I give a CourseChalk or PaceChalk pass free, until a set date — to coaches I work with, for example. A free pass works the same as a paid one. I can end it early. If I do, CourseChalk goes back to the free version and PaceChalk stops saving new changes online, exactly as when a paid pass ends. Nothing you made is deleted.
Measurement — please read this one
CourseChalk is not a certified course measurement. It calculates distance across the WGS84 ellipsoid from the points you place on the map. That is accurate arithmetic on the line you drew. It is not a survey, not a calibrated-bicycle measurement, and not a USATF or World Athletics certification.
If a course has to be officially certified, or a time run on it has to be record-eligible, you need a certified measurer. CourseChalk will get you close and it will get you honest — it will not get you certified.
The line the app measures is where you clicked, not where runners actually run. Tangents, the width of a mown lane, and where the field chooses to cut a corner are all real distance and none of them are in the drawing.
Course safety is yours
Where a course goes, whether it is safe to run, whether it crosses a road or a parking lot, how it is marshaled, and what the medical plan is — those are decisions for you and your school. A drawing tool has no opinion about a blind corner or a drainage ditch. Nothing CourseChalk prints is a safety review, and nothing in it replaces walking the course.
Your files are yours
Your meet plans, course drawings, school logos, sponsor artwork, athlete names and every word you type belong to you, and I claim no rights in them. I receive them only if you save a meet online, and then only to keep it for you: I do not look at it, use it or share it. It goes 30 days after you delete it (at once if you choose Delete forever in the trash), or when you delete your account.
The other side of that: uploading a logo or a photograph you do not have permission to use is your responsibility, not mine.
What you may not do
- Resell, sublicense, rent or redistribute CourseChalk itself. Selling the packets you make with it is exactly what it is for — selling the tool is not.
- Remove the SAMPLE watermark or the contact line from sheets without a valid license.
- Use the site or the app to break the law, or to store anything you have no right to.
- Attack the site, overload it, or try to get at other people's data — of which there is very little, but the rule stands.
Maps and data that are not mine
CourseChalk draws on services run by other people:

Their terms govern their data, and their uptime is not mine to promise. If one of them goes down or changes what it offers, CourseChalk loses that feature and I will say so on the site.
No warranty
CourseChalk is provided as is and as available, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title or non-infringement. I do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any measurement, map or printed document it produces is fit for any particular purpose of yours.
Some states do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so parts of this may not apply to you.
What I am on the hook for
To the fullest extent the law allows, I am not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, or a meet that went badly.
My total liability to you for any claim is limited to what you actually paid me in the twelve months before the claim — which, for a free user, is zero, for a season pass or PaceChalk pass holder is $49, for PaceChalk + CourseChalk is $79, for a staff plan is $99, and for Staff + CourseChalk is $129. For a free pass it is zero.
That is not me being clever. It is the honest scale of a $49 tool made by one person, and you should weigh it before you rely on this for something that matters. Some states do not allow these limits, so parts of this may not apply to you.
If something goes wrong between us
Email me first. Nearly everything is a misunderstanding that one message fixes, and I would rather refund you than argue with you.
If that fails, these terms are governed by the law of the State of Ohio, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and any dispute belongs in the state or federal courts sitting in Huron County, Ohio. There is no arbitration clause and no class-action waiver here — you keep every right you would otherwise have.
Changes to these terms
I may change these terms. If a change matters, I will date it here and say so on the site. A pass you have already bought keeps the terms it was bought under until it expires or renews.
Ending it
You can stop using CourseChalk whenever you like — there is no subscription to cancel, unless you chose a yearly PaceChalk pass or staff plan (see PaceChalk above). If you have an account, delete it from your account page or email me and I will; any meets saved in it are deleted with it. Your license keeps working either way, because it is a signed file rather than a row in my database.
I can end a license for a serious or repeated breach of these terms, and if I do that to a paying customer I will refund the unused part of the season.
